About Louise

Louise was a linguist/missionary in the Philippines when she became ill in 1973.  She has struggled with several chronic illnesses since that time--Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, a neuro-muscular disease, plus  Fibromyalgia, and Environmental Illness including chemical, inhalant, and food allergies and sensitivities.

Louise delights in creative writing, when she is well enough to do it. She also facilitates an email group for people with multiple chemical sensitivities who live in B.C.

Right now she lives in an Environmental Sensitivity Suite in Victoria, B.C. but she needs to move to a home where she is not exposed to as many chemicals as she is right now.

Although the suite has some fine points, such as tile floors and a heat recovery ventilation unit, it is located in an apartment building and in the midst of a courtyard of townhouses, and it is not a 'safe' place for Louise to live.

There are three laundries which affect Louise's health.  Most of the time she has lived there, construction has been going on. Pesticide applications occur each spring. Monthly renovations take place within the apartment building.

FOUR KEYS TO LOUISE'S FUTURE WELL-BEING

Key 1: Healthier Housing:
Louise needs clean air/healthy housing suitable for the environmenal sensitivities she suffers from.  Possibilities include a duplex, townhome, or two bedroom house near the ocean. However, a supportive living, co-housing community where neighbours maintain a clean, non-toxic environment would be ideal.

Dec. 2003 Update:  A packet of information (including application, letters, and research) has been sent to B.C. Housing requesting Private Rent Subsidy for Louise, so she might be able to move.

April 2004 Update:  Louise was sick and 'homeless" for seven weeks because of paint fumes in the apartment building. She stayed in a motel for a month and is in debt.

Louise has been approved by B.C.Housing for an Individual Rent Supplement and is looking for a townhouse.

June 2004 Update:  Louise has been sick because of pesticide and construction toxins, but is looking for housing as often as she can. So far there has not been anything suitable within the price range of the supplement offered by BC Housing.

Key 2:  Health Care and Equipment:
Louise requires tests/treatments at an Environmental Medicine Clinic--probably either Nova Scotia or Dallas. Some tests can be done before going to a clinic.

Louise needs the following equipment and supplies--mattress, oxygen tank, scooter, dishwasher, reverse osmosis water purifier, and good-quality air purifier.

Dec. 2003 Update:

  • Scooter--After a reconsideration process, Human Resources has designated Louise as eligible to receive a scooter soon.
  • Oxygen Tank--We're still needing to do more research about this.
  • Dishwasher--Louise urgently needs one. There is a possibility of buying one at discount price from Sears. The Board is waiting to vote until Louise knows what her needs are where she moves. She may urgently need a washer and dryer.
  • Water purifier and Air purifier--need research done and money raised.
April 2004 Update:  Louise still needs equipment. Currently she also needs dental work. She has some health care from a Naturopathic Clinic.

Key 3: Support and Advocacy
Dovecote educates government, professionals, friends, and family regarding ME and EI, their effects on Louise's life, as well as the need for healthy housing,medical tests/treatments,
emotional and practical support, equipment, and supplies.

Business letters are written to ministries and agencies to request subsidy for Louise's needs. Practical and emotional support are needed by volunteers, friends, and family.

Key 4: Finances
Louise needs money through subsidies, donations/trust, and grants to provide for healthy housing, medical care, dental work, equipment, supplies, and staff.
